General Information:

The Pennypack Creek Watershed is located in the southeastern corner of Pennsylvania. With approximately 56.3 mi2 of area, 31.7 mi2 (56%) is located in Montgomery County, 17.9 mi2 (32%) in Philadelphia County, and 6.7 mi2 (12%) in Bucks County. As a tributary to the Delaware River, its designated uses are warmwater fishery, migratory fishes, trout stock fishery and as a tributary to the Delaware River, the creek is also a source of drinking water.

Municipalities within this watershed drainage area include: Abington Township, Bryn Athyn Borough, Hatboro Borough, Horsham Township, Jenkintown Borough, Lower Moreland Township, Rockledge Borough, Upper Dublin Township, Upper Moreland Township, Upper Southampton Township, Warminster Township and the City of Philadelphia.

Partnership:

The Pennypack Watershed Partnership initiated in 2004; convened with the task of creating a River Conservation Plan for the watershed. This group will be reconvened in 2007 in order to initiate an integrated watershed management plan.

Watershed Planning:

Watershed management seeks to mitigate the adverse physical, biological, and chemical impacts of land uses as surface and ground waters are transported throughout the watershed to the waterways. The partnership seeks to achieve higher levels of environmental improvement by sharing information and resources.

  • An integrated watershed management plan is scheduled to be initiated within this watershed in 2007.
  • Pennypack Watershed Partnership has developed a River Conservation Plan – completed in fall of 2005. This plan is available within this site
  • A Watershed Study of the Pennypack Creek, which resulted in updated FEMA floodplain delineations for the creek and its tributaries was completed in the fall of 2006 by the Temple University Center for Sustainable Communities, and is available at: http://www.csc.temple.edu/projects/projects_pennypack.htm
  • A Pennypack Greenway planning initiative is underway to preserve, protect and restore a natural buffer and public access along the mainstem and tributaries of the Pennypack Creek, creating a true regional connection for all watershed residents.
